Let’s face it. Giving up is easier than reaching your dreams. But I believe you also know that there are wonderful benefits of not giving up and that a lot of successful people overcame it. In this article, I’ll do my best to convince you not to give up as well as help you get rid of the mental and emotional setbacks bogging your mind right now. Let’s give them a beating they truly deserve!
Why You Should Never EVER Give Up
So let’s just get to the point, shall we? Below is a list of compelling reasons why you shouldn’t quit your passions and dreams. I need to sell this idea of persistence and place it into your head because this is a very important life skill to have in order to be successful.
- You will have a wonderful story to tell
Imagine yourself lying in your death bed and looking back over your life. Which story would you rather tell your grandchildren, that “I was a quitter and a loser”, or “I was a successful person because I pushed all the way through and never gave up”? Whatever the outcome of your life may be, it will spread to your loved ones. So you choose, would you rather pass on a legacy or a disease?
- You are a very powerful being
You have unlimited reserves of potential resting inside you. The reason why you’re not seeing it is because you often underestimate your capabilities. When you feel like giving up, understand that you have the ability to turn it around. No kidding. This concept is based on the Law of Attraction, which states that every person is capable of attracting good things (as well as bad things) into his or her life.
- Someone is looking forward to your success
In a football game, when you feel like the game is over, do you just drop the ball and raise the white flag? No. That would be a huge turn off for the fans. If you closed your business, will your customers be happy with what you did, knowing that they really loved your product so much? Of course not! In short, if you’re doing something for the benefit of others, then you should never give up.
- Life is just naturally hard
Whatever hardships you’re experiencing right now is just normal. Everyone faces the same kind of thing that you are having. However, the choice is yours to make life wonderful for you because if you don’t, then you’ll plain quit. The people who are very successful made it a habit to constantly keep showing up even if they will be disappointed at times. That’s how they got to the finish line.
- There’s a huge pot of gold at the end of the rainbow
The number one reason why you should never give up is to win. Even if there’s a 99.999% chance of losing, you should never underestimate the remaining 0.001%. And even if you lose, the learnings will be deeply engraved into you that the next time around you will come out stronger. Simply put, if the pot of gold is really worth winning, then you must stay hungry for it. Never ever give up on that reward.
Knock Out Your Inner Enemies
Get up from your slump and face the inner voices from within. In this part of the article, I’m gonna introduce you to your opponents in the ring. For every item there is a corresponding counter move so that you know what to do when you come across it. If you want to keep your goals and dreams alive, then you need this handy list to help reframe your thinking.
- “I’m stuck and don’t know what to do”
Just try everything. Trust your gut feeling because the truth is, you will never know all the answers to the question. Avoid getting stuck in analysis paralysis because every second spent thinking is a second wasted doing. Create a plan and then act on it quickly. Speed is everything in this world, that’s why you should make it a habit to act fast. Don’t worry about the consequences, you can always correct them later.
- “I’m tired of doing this”
Then take a break! Maybe it’s all you need. The Mount Everest guys did not climb up flawlessly because they had to face tough terrains along the way. When I study my lessons in school, it’s not like I can go all the way through without any hassle. Sure, I build up stress, but it doesn’t mean I’m going to give up the whole thing. So from now on, forget the concept of burnout and continue working.
- “I’m not happy with what I’m doing”
Let me ask you, “Are you passionate enough in your chosen field?” Because if not, I suggest you change it right away. Follow your passion and stick with it through thick and thin no matter what. Find value in whatever you do because it makes your passion last for a long time. But if you’re in the right track already and you’re not feeling good right now, then take a rest.
- “It’s overwhelming, I can’t handle it”
If you perceive something to be big, then break it into manageable parts. Don’t go for Flight of the Bumblebee or Canon Rock when learning the piano or guitar. Start with something basic first then build upon that experience later. I know it’s tempting to start big, but that is extremely risky especially if you have no idea of what you’re doing. Remember KISS (Keep It Super Simple).
- “I don’t need to win or succeed”
Success is important because it’s a basic need like food and clothing. You must stay hungry for success and never let your inner voice beat you up on this one. Of course, not reaching your dreams means that giving up makes total sense. That’s why you should remind yourself of your goals everyday so that you always have something to look forward to.
- “I’m not good at [subject/skill]”
I remember when I first started blogging, this was the biggest challenge for me. First off, I did not take an English or a Computer-related degree which means I had to start from scratch. So what I did was I made a resolve to keep showing up everyday by dedicating myself to continuous learning. I might not know a lot, but surely I’m getting something done.
- “I made a lot of mistakes and I suck”
So what? Aren’t mistakes a great way to learn? The unfortunate reality with the school system is that it teaches people not to commit mistakes. Our teachers told us that it’s bad to make one and that we should avoid it at all costs. But since you’ve come across my article, I want you to unlearn that lesson and start making mistakes. In this way, you can get much closer to your goals.
- “I’m a sore loser and a huge failure”
Ouch, this is a very painful statement you can say to yourself. To help alleviate this, relax and do some other things first. You can also seek your friends’ help for guidance in order to get you back on track. Sometimes, all it needs is a little rest and some quiet time to ponder on your mistakes. The Universe might just be teaching you a valuable lesson and that you need to lend your ears to hear it.
- “Something/someone is getting in my way”
So you’re gonna let them stop you from getting the pot of gold? Focus! Find ways to get back on track with what you love doing and go around the obstacle. Successful people tend to have the ability to adapt to their surroundings and that they never let anyone ruin their plans. If you don’t want to adapt, then go change your environment and the people that surround you.
- “The ________ is/are tough”
Fill in the blanks with any condition that you can probably point fingers at (economy, poverty, competition, etc). But also realize that the other three fingers are actually pointing back at you. In other words, it’s simply your fault. Take responsibility and do your best to take full control of your life by getting better everyday. Bruce Lee said, “Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.”
Will You Still Give Up?
In the end, it all boils down to the internal dialogues that are happening inside your head. Be wary that these mini talks add up and will inevitably reach the tipping point if not addressed. If you really want to make your life a very fulfilling one, I suggest that you keep pushing forward.
If you’re still not convinced by the end of this article and when all resources have been exhausted, maybe it makes sense to give up. Sure, give it a try and see if abandoning your dream helps you in some way or not. The truth is, no mere mortal is ever safe from facing such shortcomings (including me). Surely, there were times I had to give up on something, but simply because I didn’t find my passion there.
To better understand the principles of success and help you further with reaching your goals and dreams, I recommend getting the book The 10X Rule by Grant Cardone. When I’m losing motivation, I just go back to this book to help get myself back on track. So see if it works for you or not.
