This article is all about Self-Motivation Techniques. Motivation is very important because it helps us to feel more energized and excited with our everyday lives. So how do you acquire motivation? In this article, I’m want to share with you my list of techniques on how I make myself motivated. I remember back then when I was in college, I had to rely on my mentor for motivation. The problem is, he’s not always there all the time when I needed him. I realized that I had to rely on myself. So I went on a quest to discover the techniques that worked for me. And right now, I’m ready to share this with you all.
Now on to the list
Without further ado, I want to introduce you to my list of self-motivational techniques. Take note that this is my list and these are the techniques that work for me. While most of them are applicable to your life, I want you to come up with your own unique list as well. Just take some ideas from me and then develop your own techniques. Here they go.
1) Take a well-deserved break and grab yourself a snack
Maybe all you need is a short break and a handy snack to get yourself back on track. If you’re feeling stuck and you’ve squeezed all your productive juices while working or you feel depressed and it seems like you have nowhere to go, then try this simple trick. It might help to put you back on track.
2) Reward yourself like a VIP
This is one of my favorite techniques because it really makes me motivated. If I know that there is a reward at the end of the task and I wanted it so badly, then I would do all that it takes to acquire it. Just make sure that the reward is very special and it would feel like you’re a VIP, like a trip to the movie theatre, or a 3 days 2 nights vacation, or anything that would really get you jacked up.
3) Live a healthy lifestyle
This seems pretty obvious, but sometimes get missed out. You have to keep yourself healthy if ever you want to go for motivation. Have a good night sleep of about 6 to 8 hours. Drink plenty of water and eat the right foods and stay away from junk food. Exercise regularly (which I admittedly lack) and take a walk in the park. I may not be an expert on health and fitness, but I’m sure that this one helps.
4) Get in an environment that supports your growth
Getting in an environment simply means staying in a place or getting in a circle of friends that will heavily influence your growth. If you feel that you are more productive inside a coffee shop, then consider working there. If you want to be a good person, stay in a circle of good, productive friends. If you want to become a great basketball player, stay in a basketball club and train there. Surely, the influence you’ll get will definitely boost your motivation.
5) Help other people by giving them a hand
When you feel stuck with your work or when you’re feeling down, it might help to take your attention away from it and focus on something else. Why not spend your time lending a hand? Try helping others first if you can’t seem to help yourself in the moment. Making others happy makes you happy and will therefore give you motivation. Treat your friends at lunch, go help them with their problems, or simply sit and chat with them for a while and it might relieve you by just doing that.
6) Turn off all sources of negativity
Even if you do your best to motivate yourself, it just might not work when you are in a negative environment. It may be your friends are negative. It may be the drama you’re watching on the TV that’s causing you to feel negative. Let me tell you something, “Cut it out!” You know it ain’t gonna help moving you forward. If you’re doing your best to stay motivated and someone or something is trying to pull you down, then cut them off. Focus on all the positivity that life has to offer and you will get your motivation back.
7) Set your priorities in life and just get started
It’s so easy to get overwhelmed by all the information out there. As it turns out, there are only a few things that are important, that when done will give you lots of motivation. The key is to get something done, and not ending up stuck with analysis paralysis. For example, I discovered that there are at least a dozen ways to make money online. However, it’s so overwhelming that I froze and never made a decision. The solution? I prioritized on doing one, in which case I chose affiliate marketing. Then I felt motivated again, not because affiliate marketing is awesome, but because I’ve finally made a choice and got started at last.
8) Determine your purpose in anything you do
When a person lacks motivation especially when doing work, he or she tends to burn out. Your energy and willpower is limited and yet the amount of work that your boss throws at you increases. So you push more and more up to a certain point when you can no longer handle anymore, and you’ll just say: “I quit”. I don’t question that kind of behaviour if this were you. You quit because you lose your purpose, as simple as that. Define your purpose in anything you do because it’s the purpose that will keep you intact. If you want to get rich, it’s important to know why you want to get rich first before getting into the how’s. Because of that, your purpose must excite you if ever you’re going to make it your motivation.
9) Look at all the things that you’ve accomplished in life
I’m sure that everyone had their own share of accomplishments in life, and I’m certain that you can remember some of them. All you have to do is to get them to the surface. Write them down, look back into those memories, share it with your friends, and make sure to do this once in a while. This technique can help you get motivated because it makes you excited and boosts your self- confidence. It’s like saying to yourself: “Hey, I did this before. I’m sure I can do this again.”
10) Chant powerful mantras that can make you feel better
Mantras are words that help stimulate and empower your mind. You do this by creating an affirmation, then begin by reciting it repeatedly either silently or verbally. The effectiveness of this technique increases greatly if you do it alongside meditation and powerful music. Find the best place to do this, which is one with a quiet surrounding and with no distractions. Trust me, the feeling is awesome when you emerge from it. Large dose of motivation.
11) Set your goals and make them BIG
Goal-setting is a very powerful technique for motivation and is something that I do everyday. Goals are created in order for you to have a sense of direction in your life. Even if you become so busy with your life, a simple look at your goals will remind you that you have something to work for. So make sure that you set them big and juicy, and not those small and boring ones. This holds true for me because it doesn’t thrill me to act on my goals if I know that it’s too small. Remember, what we aim here is motivation and the energy to get going. If you’re aiming for an extra thousand bucks a month, then go for ten thousand instead. You’ll see the difference.
12) Make it a habit to believe the impossible
When you start thinking big, you’ll realize that you are venturing into a world that seems impossible to reach. When you set a big goal, let’s say you want to earn $1,000,000 a year, you might feel anxious and uncomfortable with the goal. The common response then would be to back off and say, “I can’t do it, it’s impossible!” When you’re like that, the first thing I want you to do is to change your words. Instead of saying “It’s impossible”, say “How can it be possible?” When you do this, your mind opens up to all the possibilities of achieving your goal, and will therefore get you motivated.
13) Constantly challenge yourself
Challenging yourself is like bodybuilding in which you increase the intensity as you get stronger. For example, if you’re comfortable earning $3,000 a month, try challenging yourself to go for 5,000, and then 10,000, 20,000, and so on. And remember, always believe that it is possible, that it can be done. Your mind will stretch and it will build muscles (sweet!) if you exercise it through challenges. Every challenge surpassed is a great dose of motivation.
14) Remember to always love what you’re doing
When you go out and do your daily activities, are you doing it for the sake of doing it, or are you doing it because you LOVE to do it? You need passion, and it’s a sure source of motivation. No one can ever define what you love to do other than you yourself. So take a break to find out what your real passions are. Following your passion and developing it will always get you excited every time you wake up in the morning.
15) Commit yourself to continuous learning
“You can never learn enough”, that’s my motto in life. Every time I learn something new, it satisfies my mind and soul. Simply put, if you dedicate yourself to continuous learning, your life will just get better and better. You can never say that you know everything, it’s a dangerous claim. There’s always room for improvement in anything you do even if you’re already an expert or the best at your field. Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, two of the wealthiest persons on the planet, still continue to read up to this moment even if they had already amassed monumental amounts of success. Commit yourself fully to becoming a student of life and you will eventually get unlimited motivation.
16) Try new things once in a while
While it’s good to settle and be contented with what you know, it helps to try new things in order to grow in life. At first, it may seem uncomfortable because you are unfamiliar with things at the start. But trust me, anything you learn in life are always like that from the start. However, when you’ve showed enough times and you never gave up on learning, you will eventually get familiarized with the newly learned idea or skill. After which the learning is yours plus, more motivation.
17) Stay hungry for success (crave for it)
Never treat success like it’s only an option because success is important, and it’s what makes you valuable. If you don’t have it, you will find it hard to get motivated. In fact, I don’t want you to just achieve success, I want you to be always hungry for it (crave like it’s your favorite dessert). Every feat of accomplishment in life will always help you and will never be bad. To sum up, I have a simple formula that I use if you don’t understand all this. The formula is: More Success = More Motivation.
18) Finish every task with amazing results
We all do tasks everyday. But no matter how intense or how trivial your tasks are, from cleaning your desk to creating a sales presentation, I want you to get the job done and produce great results as well. Any unfinished task is actually a demotivation (I know that because I know how it feels). Also, don’t just finish the task and tell people that you’ve exerted great effort and instead focus on results. Follow this because when you produce great results, people will look up and admire you for a job well done. That in turn creates motivation.
19) Dominate and be the best at what you’re doing
I must admit that this technique is one of the hardest to be successful at, however it pays great dividends once you’re starting to reap the efforts that you sow in the process, including an unlimited supply of motivation. But what does it take to be the best? You might ask. First, you must have the passion in what you’re doing. Second, you have to commit to continuous learning and trying new things. Third, make this a habit everyday because once you’ve shown enough number of times, you’ll be able to dominate in your chosen field or industry or hobby.
20) Become so famous that you’re being talked about
Imagine a million people talking about you every single day. Take a thousand of them who happen to admire you with what you’re doing and they all left you a comment about how awesome you are. How would you feel? If the person they admire is me, I would feel awesome! It’s a very special motivation for me. I would be willing to work hard just to reach this status and I’ll be godlike.
21) Be systematic with your work
I’m an information guy. I love to take in data from many different sources and write them down in my notebook. This might sound a little crazy, but it actually helps in the long run. When I look back in my notes, I always tend to grab some old ideas that I had and use it in the present time. So if you have some time to spend, you should consider creating a system in everything you do. Schedule tasks, write daily goals, monitor your calories, do everything that it takes to make yourself more systematic and organized with your work. It can be a huge boost in your motivation, considering the amount of hassle it saves you.
22) Be unique
In this last technique, I want you all to understand one thing: you are special. No matter what experiences you’ve gone through life whether good or bad, has shaped you into the person you are now. What I’m trying to point out is that through your unique set of skills, traits and characteristics, comes motivation that only you can get. Don’t try to fit in within the cultural norms. Instead, learn to establish your identity, which is something that other people will come to admire in you. People might be able to take everything from you, but they can never take away your name. So always remember, you’re special.
My Final Thoughts
These are the following ways that I motivate myself in life. Take note that you don’t have to do them all the time, nor do I require you to follow any one of them. I believe in the uniqueness of every person, so I recommend that you only pick the best of the techniques that I suggested, those that will only work for you. However, if you feel that something is not included in the list, feel free to alter and modify to create your own unique set of self-motivation techniques that will definitely work for you.
