Negativity gives you a bad feeling of things to come, therefore it really helps to get rid of bad thoughts so that your mind can focus on the things that really matter in life. As you read, you will discover the most common examples of negative thoughts that affect every person on this planet (myself included). You will also learn the impacts of letting negativity thrive into your system and how it can affect your overall lifestyle. If you’ve been negative at some point in your life, you know what it feels to fall under the spell, right? But don’t fret, I’ll share with you some tips on how you can turn your life around and start attracting positivity into your life once again.
It helps to pause for a while when you seem to have nowhere to go. You can’t push further to reach success if something from within you is stopping you in your tracks. What we’re going to do in this section is find out which thoughts have been affecting your life the most and what you can do about it. If something grabs your attention, take note of it.
- I’m not _________ enough
This is a common dialogue that I hear from people around me. Even I unconsciously say things like “I’m not good enough” or “I’m not smart enough”, which makes me feel bad about myself. The problem with this thinking is that it hurts your self-image, which in turn decreases your confidence. The way you see yourself is key to understanding why you became who you are right now.
- I can’t ____________
The word “can” refers to the ability of a person to do things. However, if you say “can’t”, you are confirming to yourself that you’ll NEVER be able to do the thing that you want. When you say “I can’t afford that house”, you’re starting to implant a negative thought inside your head. Through repetition it will become your reality, and you’ll never be able to afford that house.
- I will never ___________
Expressions such as “I will never be rich” or “I will never lose weight” mean that you doom yourself into the situation that you are in. When you have this thought running in your head, you basically kill your creativity and imagination to get what you really want. You kill all the hope that is left from your thoughts, start raising the white flag and unconsciously saying “I give up”.
- What if ____________
This thought suggests that something bad will happen in a given situation. “What if my crush rejects me? What if I lose my money? What if I make a bad decision?” are some of the typical questions that bother a negative person. The problem with worrying too much about something is that it impedes your ability to act on the situation. Like when you are investing, the fear of losing money prevents you from buying the investment.
- People will think that I _____________
There are times that you make assumptions about what people will think of you prior to doing something. The reason is to avoid criticisms as much as possible because you will feel bad about it. Doing things such as starting a business, going on a diet, dating a woman, or applying for a job will feel uncomfortable because you feel as if people around you will start to criticize you in everything you do.
Having realized the most common dialogues of a negative person, let’s now discuss what impacts it will bring to your life. By the way, I’m not going to talk in terms of health issues, emotional setbacks, or side effects when it comes to negativity. Let’s make it plain simple and summarize it into just “three” fundamental effects. So here it goes.
- Negativity SLOWS you down
Like hitting the pedal on the brakes, negative thoughts are responsible for slowing you down while you are traveling in life. Imagine feeling stressed all the time because you are constantly paying attention to your negative thoughts. When you are trying to move forward and something is pulling you back, you tend to slow down. Your body will show signs of it in the form of depression, anxiety, or fear.
- Negativity STOPS you in your tracks
Also, taking too much negativity will completely stop you in life. Having no confidence in yourself for example will weaken you until you completely give up on your dream. Not taking action on the business plan is the result of fear completely taking over you. Quitting on your diet plan means that you’ve given up on losing weight and dreaming of a healthy body. Overall, this is a very dangerous situation to get in.
- Negativity REVERSES your life
What I mean by reversing is that not only do you stop, but you also go the other way around. It’s like switching to reverse gear with your car and start moving backward in life. In this stage, you are actually DESTROYING yourself and ruining other people’s lives because you now look at the world with so much pessimism that you’ve completely abandoned your dreams. Examples of people who are in this stage are those who take alcohol and drugs, commit crimes, and those who criticize successful people.
How to Reverse the Pole, From Negative to Positive
Now that we’ve talked much about negativity, let’s turn it into POSITIVITY. Research has shown that a positive thought is 100 times more powerful than a negative thought. So it helps to replace your negative thoughts with positive ones by utilizing the power of your mind. There are many ways to do this, but I’ll show you the tips that make the most sense to me.
- Evaluate the Thought
Your negative thoughts are there for a reason. While being negative is bad overall, sometimes it can help to evaluate why you are thinking that thought. Often, it’s not about how the world behaves, but rather it’s how you look at the world that matters. For example, if you get a grade of A, do you give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done, or are you ashamed of yourself for not getting an A+?
If the latter is true, then ask yourself: “Why am I ashamed of not getting an A+?” Maybe you are striving for perfection, that’s why you set high expectations for yourself. You’ll realize that as you dig more into your thoughts, you will know why you are thinking the thought and hopefully be able to find a solution to your negative thoughts.
- Stop Worrying about it
Maybe you are just overthinking stuff, the reason why you feel negative about yourself. I mean people will definitely go through tough times, whether we like it or not. Everyone faces the ups and downs of life, which maybe is the reason why we are thinking negatively sometimes. I repeat, going through negative thoughts is NORMAL. However, if you are thinking the same thought everyday, then that’s not a healthy sign of negativity. You must kill it at once when it gets worse.
I was known for being too overreactive with things even in the smallest of stuff. Sometimes, I would go overboard for scaling up a seemingly trivial situation. As a result, I feel stressed all the time because now I have these negative thoughts filling in my mind. Even now, I still have this habit of overacting, but now I’ve learned how to manage these thoughts.
- Seek Motivation
There are lots of motivational techniques out there, especially those that will take your attention away from your bad thoughts. Techniques such as affirmations, goals and purpose will surely heal you and your negative thoughts, as well as propel you towards success. You can also ask your friends to help you and seek their guidance, for as long as you don’t have the intention of spreading the negativity around.
I love motivation. I constantly seek it everyday because I want to be able to do the things I really want. Considering that I only work at home, motivation is very important in the pursuit of my success. I don’t want negativity to come near me and take away my precious time, so I do my best to fend them off once I start to feel them.
- Find Something Productive to Do
I notice this in my life very often. I remember that at one point in my life, I was completely idle and had nothing to do with my time. I lied down in bed all day long, waiting for the succeeding days to come. It was a pretty tough experience because it felt like I was burning and slowly deteriorating in life. Also, negative thoughts started to take over my mind during those times because after all, I had nothing to do in my list.
So how did I get through? I looked for something to do such as reading books, watching videos, and learning something new every day to ease the anxiety that runs in my mind. I also went to the mall to keep myself busy and then watched some movies to keep myself relaxed. After doing all these things, I recovered from my slump and started creating a productive life.
Negativity is bad no matter how you look at it. You must do your best to keep negativity away from your system because it’s a disease. The worst part is that negative thoughts are contagious. Although most people are used to hearing negative statements, I think that is extremely dangerous to live in such a harsh mental environment. I strongly recommend that you don’t tolerate such kind of ‘abuse’ and do something about it by choosing to live in a positive environment all the time.
