In this article, I’ll show you the power of focus in life and how you can start using it to accomplish anything you want in life. I believe this to be a very important asset that we must tap into to create huge amounts of success. It’s really all about the things that we normally pay attention to that creates our life, so it’s worth monitoring these thoughts.
Why Focusing is Important
There’s a well-known acronym for FOCUS, which stands for “Follow One Course Until Successful”. The most important word in the quote is “one”, not two, three, four, five, six, seven, and so on. It is in having only one thing that creates the difference between success and failure. This wonderful ability is very useful in many areas of life such as career, relationships, and in business.
Maintaining your focus helps keep your brain more effective and allows for spectacular tasks to be done well. It also allows for better productivity and smoother transition of things. However, the opposite will create a horrible life especially if not checked. The person involved might overwhelm himself of the thoughts that fill his mind. Yes, progress will be made, but it’s slower than focusing on just one thing at a time.
I’ve compiled a list of how-to’s below to help you get started. Your ability to focus is like a car in a drag race. There are two ways to speed up the car, you can either reduce the drag, or increase the power of its engine. Your ability to concentrate can be improved by either eliminating distractions or pumping more focus into your system. Try to assess your everyday life and find out which method works for you.
How to Eliminate Distractions
These techniques are applicable if you find that there are a lot of distractions around you and having a hard time getting through it. You may already have lots of focusing power but you’re just facing roadblocks along the way.
This is the principle of having a minimalized lifestyle. Some ways you can do this include cleaning up your workspace, reducing the items that you buy, letting go of the past (emotional clutter), sticking to one technique, and just keeping it simple. Learn more by going to Leo Babauta’s website called Zen Habits which is a blog about minimalism.
- Set Your Most Important Tasks
Are you having trouble with your to-do list? The problem lies not on the tasks but in your ability to prioritize the most important tasks for the day. When you wake up from bed, learn to set these tasks and take action on it right away. Ask yourself, what are the things that will complete your day? The reason you couldn’t focus is because these tasks are bothering you all day until it isn’t done.
- Avoid Multitasking
The great thing about MIT’s (Most Important Tasks) is that they are just few and therefore can be handled one at a time. Multitasking does not really mean handling five tasks at a time, it’s just switching from task 1 to task 2 until it reaches task 5. For every switch your mind does, it receives a time penalty because your mind would have to adapt to every task. If you want multitasking, have someone help you with the task.
Remember the time when your parents told you to focus first on studying and get good grades? Chances are, you had some things going on in your mind other than opening a book and preparing for the next exam. It might be checking on Facebook, playing video games, hanging out with your friends, or anything worth spending time with. Real focus requires sacrifice sometimes in order to become effective.
- Environment is Key
For example, if you decide to work from home with a laptop maybe as a freelancer or blogger and there’s too much noise and distractions at home, how can you focus on what you’re doing? Also, if you have a social circle of friends who think negatively of your career and goals, that’s not a good sign either. That’s why you should do your best to be in the best environment possible (not necessarily perfect).
- No Fantasizing Please
While it’s good to have an extraordinary life and set big goals, you should stop thinking big if it’s getting in the way of what needs to be done. Too much fantasizing can ruin an awesome goal if not checked. If you are working on a business for example and you spend too much time looking at luxurious cars and big mansions, it will get you distracted on the bigger picture.
- Stay Away from the Vacuum
The attention span of human beings in the 80’s is around 20 minutes. But now with the rise of the Internet, it has been reduced to 9 seconds! Websites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google, and perhaps E-Mail are so awesome that they get you hooked for very long hours. These are what I’m referring to as “the vacuum”, because they literally suck your time once you get in. If you want to focus more, stay away from them.
- Learn to Say NO
Making a commitment to one thing means that you can’t attend to other stuff. Once you’re in, you should learn to say no if you really want to maintain your focus. Say no to Facebook, TV, and most importantly, say no to people who are not in alignment with your goals. I know this is tough to do, but in order to create the life you want, you’ve got to be selfish at least one time for your own sake.
How to Pump More Focus
I actually recommend to eliminate all distractions first before you try to concentrate on the activities you will do. Doing so will make your mind more efficient as well as productive. Now let’s learn how to move forward.
- Set Huge Goals and Work on It
For those of you who haven’t set a goal yet, now is the time to do so. Life is a journey, and every journey has a destination. You need to set your roadmap for success if ever you’re going to make it through. Maybe you want to become a best-selling author, run multi-million dollar businesses, or win a championship trophy. The juicier and more exciting your goals are, the more you’ll stay focused at it.
- Do What Needs to Be Done NOW
Stop dwelling in your past, it’s a waste of time. Instead focus on the present moment and do the things that are important for you. Time is such an important resource and is something that is hard to reproduce. The moment I started moving forward in life is when I’ve set my priorities in life via goals. I admit I cannot do everything, but I can definitely do something. Stop thinking and start acting.
- Have Someone Monitor You
Sometimes it only takes a little push to do the things you need to do and all you need is someone to keep you in check. When you go off course, he or she is the one who will correct your direction. The great thing about seeking help is that other people will see things that you can’t see by giving you feedback. Remember, two heads are better than one, therefore tag your friends along and tell them your progress.
- Systemize your Process
Creating systems is one way to help ease your mind of the things that are not that important. Create morning rituals when you wake up such as writing your goals and doing your MIT’s. Keep a notebook with you to write down the thoughts that you’re thinking and go back to it at a later time. Set up your email and social media schedules and follow it. The more organized you become, the more focused you will be.
- Monitor your Mental Health
Keep your brain in check by relaxing it for a while using any method you prefer such as meditating and reciting affirmations. Games can help stimulate your mind, but don’t overdo it so as to make it an addiction. Focus is a mind game and it definitely helps to invest your time in making it stronger.
- Take care of your Physical Body
Exercise can help improve your brain’s functions, therefore it helps to move and stretch your body for a while. Eat the proper foods and stay away from the bad ones especially those that won’t make you feel good. Doing activities while not feeling good will detriment your ability to focus.
- Keep Learning and Practicing
The more experience you have with an activity, the better your chances are at maintaining focus. You can achieve this by reading books, listening to motivational speakers, and applying all your learnings. Commit to this process everyday and you will discover opportunities to learn more. This snowball effect allows for more and more momentum which greatly enhances your focus.
- Do the Things You Love
It’s called Passion, and it’s the biggest determining factor of success. It’s the ability to work for 12+ hours while not realizing it because you are so hooked on what you’re doing. If you were given a task to do something you don’t love and are required to work for 12 hours, you will probably give up in the process. Therefore, following your passion is very important if ever you want to stay focused in the game.
