Passion. Some people think it’s important while others think it isn’t. So the question is, should you follow your passion or not? When I explored and delved into the insights from the opposition side, I realized that it’s not that passion was bad. There was just something missing in the equation. Guess what, I’m going to reveal them in this article.
Since you took the time to read this, I assume you want to be successful in pursuing the right passion. To do that, you need to first learn how you might go wrong and mess up. I’ll introduce you to Good Passion and Bad Passion, two terminologies that I created to simplify the entire process. Obviously, you want to go for the good side and avoid the bad ones. So let’s begin with Good Passion.
Good Passion: Focus On This Entirely
First, I will tell you what the right way of having passion is. I believe when you are passionate about something that follows the following criteria, you will have higher chances of success. So how do you know you’re right?
- You are spending most of your time on it
This is the most obvious criteria of all. How many hours are you spending on developing your passion? Here’s the deal: You can’t hack time no matter how good you try. You see, I don’t believe in part-time passion. If you’re going to do something worthwhile, I suggest you go “all-in” and spend your entire day thinking and practicing it.
- You are so good at what you’re doing
Cal Newport emphasized the idea that becoming the best is simply the way to create your passion, not the other way around. This suggests that in order to attain a strong liking with what you do, you should invest in improving yourself every single day. If people perceive you as someone who has the talent and expertise, then you’re in the right track.
- You are only focusing on ONE thing
When someone tells you that he is passionate about playing golf and piano, don’t believe him. For passion to work, it requires intense focus and commitment to only ONE thing. Why? Because it will allow you to strengthen your foundation in your chosen field. It will also make the process way easier to become a more effective expert and therefore dominate your space.
- You still show up even if times are bad
Life is hard. It’s like a rollercoaster ride that goes through all the ups and downs of life. But you know, society is so good at making us comfortable and it’s an idea that most of us are sold to. That’s why we could never imagine a life outside of our comfort zone. However, for passion to thrive, you must be tough during rough times and show to the world that you will never give up on it no matter what.
- You are sometimes irrational with your decisions
When you are so obsessed with the activities you’re partaking, you would go beyond reason and fight hard for your passion. Even if you are getting criticisms of what you’re doing, you still continue and won’t budge. Setting huge goals and thinking big for example are actually bad for most people especially to those who have given up on their dreams.
- Most importantly, you are providing tremendous VALUE to others
All the criteria above won’t matter at all if you are not focusing on providing huge value to other people. The best value that I can think of is by having your passion monetized either through a job or a business. You can also build a follower base who will appreciate your expertise or voluntarily help someone to succeed. Reaching more people through your passion will definitely make you successful.
Bad Passion: Avoid These At All Costs
Now let’s go and identify the improper ways of finding your passion. Unfortunately, if your passions fall under this category, then you have been given bad advice. However, I’m confident that you can correct yourself if things mess up. So what are the wrong things to do?
- You rarely spend time acting on it
If you have a crush and you told me that you’ve been courting her for 5 years, but then you only meet her twice a year, do you think she will like you? The same works for passion. If you attend to it for ten minutes in the first day and skip the next two days, do you think you will advance in life? Always remember, time is your number one fuel in everything you do (not just your passion).
- You get easily distracted with what you’re doing
There are too many shiny objects and laser points that can take you off course from what you’re doing. I must admit, even I still fall for this problem. After all, the average attention span of people in the Information Age is just 9 seconds! Imagine opening your Internet browser looking for the best dating advice, only to end up learning how to make money online. Now that’s real distraction.
- You have multiple unrelated passions
Let me ask you, what are the things you love? Enumerate them all. If you have more than one written on the paper, then I must say that all of them are Bad Passions. You simply can’t have two or more of them running simultaneously in your head. Unless all of them are related, the only time you can pick another passion is when you’re already successful.
- You are just talking out your passion
So you have friends whom you love talking to. You then brag about the things you’re passionate about. But deep within, you knew that you’ve only tried that passion once and never really maintained your interest on it. If you’re only talking about something and not acting on it consistently, then it’s a Bad passion. Just remember, action speaks louder than words.
- You are showing apathy in a broader sense
I was formerly playing online games and gadgets and I’m so addicted to them that I simply didn’t care about the outside. This apathy has caused me a lot of trouble because now I’m missing out on more important things in life. It’s okay if I was doing it in subtle amounts, but no, I simply didn’t care in a broader sense. If you think what you love doing is destructive, then it is a Bad Passion.
Don’t Overthink Too Much
At the end of the day, all of these stuff are just information. The reason why I put this up is to make you realize that passion is not something that you should take lightly. After all, passion is an emotion and it might get in the way of your thinking. Just as you would pick the man or woman of your life, it requires careful planning. Don’t fall slave to passion just because what you’re doing makes you happy.
I still strongly believe in the power of passion and what it can do to your success. The only problem I see is having the wrong definition of passion. Unfortunately, most people don’t get the definition right and that’s what often causes them to fail. I hope that the criteria given above can help you in a huge way when determining the right passion for you.
The Tools You Will Need For Your Good Passion
Once you’ve determined the right passion that works best for you, it’s time to implement it and create the best life out of it. Listed below are the key ingredients in order for your passion to be sustainable and as resilient as it could be through the test of time.
This will serve as your constant source of energy and motivation to keep pushing forward. When you have an environment that contradicts with your passion, how can you expect it to survive? If for example your friends are employees but you are craving to be an entrepreneur, what will you do? Find groups or clubs that are full of business-minded people.
Reduce your talking and start doing. Whatever you’ve learned so far demands application in real life situations. If you say that you love basketball but you’re only watching NBA and not playing the ball, I guarantee that your passion will be short lived. Find actual or hands-on application to develop your skills into something that can be appreciated by others.
Make it a goal to quit your job and do everything that it takes to accomplish that. Grow multiple streams of income and learn financial education in order to free yourself from money problems. Change your environment in order for it to work for you and not against you. As much as possible, you want to take full control of your passion the way a pilot controls his or her aircraft so that you may be able to steer it in the right direction.
What do I mean by resources? Money. Time. Energy. People. Expertise. Moral Support. All of these are things you need in order to sustain a good, long-term passion. If you don’t have every one of them, that’s fine. Just prioritize on getting these resources first if you want to survive. The point of all these is sustainability in the long run and making sure that you won’t abruptly stop.
This is an absolute must and that which you should be fully committed to acquiring everyday. I don’t care whether you read a non-fiction book for only 10 minutes or watch a tutorial that lasts for 2 hours. As long as you are continuously learning and investing in your personal growth, I guarantee that you will be on your way to success.
When you have a system, you would have something to cling on through good or bad. Take note that this varies for every person. So what I find effective for my passion might not work for you. But what are the things that you can systemize? Try the following:
- Improving your productivity
- Mastering the way you learn
- Finding a constant source of motivation (Environment)
- Maintaining good health (physical, social, mental, emotional & spiritual)
- Systemizing your business
The most powerful tool a person has is the mind. Once trained, it can literally conquer anything. Every successful person knows this concept pretty well. That’s why the more they train their mind, the more success they literally attract into their life. So in order for your passion to prosper, you should develop your mindset by seeing the possibility of success even if others can’t.
Invest for the Long Term
Now that I’ve given you the proper tools to properly find your passion and purpose in life, it’s time to go look for it and work your way to success. You can’t just pick one and be successful overnight. It takes months or even years for everything to fall in place. But I assure you, it will pay you for a lifetime.
Let me also tell you that it’s okay to make mistakes and it’s completely normal to have some. After all, that’s the best kind of learning in life. You might not be in the right passion now when you read this article, but now is the opportunity to change it for the better. Use this blog as your guide to ensure your long term success and finally achieve real happiness in life.
