There are many benefits of work at home jobs which makes it a convenient source of income. By just having a laptop and a strong internet connection, you can make money in many different ways. However though, not everyone will be able to enjoy the benefits of this opportunity due to several reasons, which is the main focus of this article. I’ll explain why having a job at home might not work for you and what you can do about it. By the way, my intention here is not to discourage you and keep you from working at home. I just want you to be familiar with what’s going on in the life of a home-based worker, and how you can prepare if you and your laptop would want to give it a try.
Reasons Why Working at Home Won’t Work
While it is convenient to work at the comfort of your home, it can’t be avoided that there are certain obstacles that you must face if you are going to commit to this type of work. Before you get started, here is a list of reasons why you will have a hard time making money from this endeavor. Treat this as your guide before you get started so that you’ll be aware of what to experience as a work at home person.
- Your Home is a Place of Comfort
This is very obvious and is something that you must look upon if ever you’re going to convert it into a workplace. What we normally do at home are things such as resting or sleeping, watching TV, interacting with family members, and doing household chores. It wasn’t meant to be a workplace, especially if you’re living in an environment full of distractions. If you happen to live in such places, then working in your house is not a good option.
- Having Too Many Distractions
I normally get distracted by browsing too much Facebook and YouTube, playing games in my tablet, and my favorite: lying down in bed and sleeping. It’s okay for me to slack off if I don’t have work to do. The problem is, I have LOTS of things to do. Imagine, if you are exposed to a lot of distractions, how can you focus on your job? My short answer is no, you can’t do that. It’s impossible to focus on a certain task and gain momentum from it if you are constantly shifting your attention to a lot of things.
- Breeding Ground for Laziness
There are a lot of things that will take away your attention at home and not be able to focus on your job. This results to having unfinished tasks and pending jobs to do. The reason is it’s easier to procrastinate in the comfort of your own home than in a real workplace. In the office or field, there is someone who will monitor you and your progress so that you get the task done. When you’re working at home, no one will discipline you but yourself. So if you don’t have enough self-discipline, then this kind of job is not for you.
- You become More Pressured to Work
For people who are allowed to work at home instead of commuting to work, the pressure of doing a wonderful job increases. The reason your boss will most likely allow you to work at home is because he trusts your ability to get the job done. The same goes for freelancers, the company is most likely to have high expectations for you because the company provides you with the most comfort while working. But if you like pressure and you’re thrilled about it, then proceed with your job.
- No Social Life at Home
Another problem with working at home is that your social connections are limited to only those who are around you, which is your family. If you are the type of person who talks about the latest trends, you might get left out as a result of not having contact with your friends, who by the way are busy with their jobs. You don’t have any coworkers whom you can tell stories to because you are isolated from the group. Even if you have Facebook or Twitter to keep yourself updated, it could still become a boring world especially in the long term.
- Less Physical Stimulation
If you’re always at home, chances are you will be sitting with your laptop along with the tools you need at work. And most likely, you’ll settle in a comfortable chair in front of a working table to get the job done and you’ll do this for several hours. Sitting for long hours will degrade your physical health especially if you don’t take a break and move a while. Also, your eyes will be exposed to considerable amounts of radiation and might damage it in the long term. You might get the job done, but in exchange for your physical health.
What You Can Do with these Problems
These are the most common problems with work at home jobs. But don’t lose hope, because these obstacles can be eliminated or minimized so that it would not bother you in your work. In this section, I’ll be discussing the things that you can do in order to reduce the problems that were stated above and bring it down to a manageable size. I hope that I could help you through this list and start earning income from the comfort of your own house.
- Ask for the Support of Your Family
This is important because in order for you to do productive work at home, you need support from your family. Most likely, they will understand and cooperate by lending you a hand with anything you need or by simply leaving you alone when you’re busy. This solution helps a lot in minimizing distractions, as well as to fend off boredom at home. If possible, you can ask your loved ones to monitor you while working so that you won’t slack off. They can really be of great help at times when you feel you want to stop.
- Keep in Touch with Your Friends
If you won’t be able to make new friends because you’re just at home, then keep your current friends in touch. Interact with them by hanging out with them sometimes or by simply leaving a message on Facebook and hopefully start a conversation. Try taking a walk with them or go to the restaurant or some other place and start talking about the things that matter to you such as getting updated with the latest trends. Doing so will keep your social health in check and you’ll feel motivated to work more.
- Invest in a Coworking Space
There are instances where staying at home and working there will simply never work. If that’s the case and you really need to get out, try finding a coworking space near you. This is basically a space you can work on with minimal to no distractions at all. My suggestion is to know your work behavior first and master it so that you’ll find the right working space for you. Plus, there are other people who work there, therefore you’ll be able to make new friends. The point I want to make is that you should go somewhere else other than your house to lessen your distractions.
- Create Systems or Set Schedules
If you choose to work from home, then you need to develop an attitude called self-discipline. Now don’t be intimidated by the word, it simply means that you become more systematic with your job and be able to follow your set schedules. Most likely if you’ve been working at home for quite some time, you will have noticed that your behavior fluctuates. By simply tapping into these behavioral patterns, you’ll be able to work more effectively than with no discipline. In simplest terms, do what works for you and leave what doesn’t work. To learn more, read articles about behavior or productivity.
- Do Something when Not Busy
In order to compensate for the lack of physical stimulation, do some physical work if you find the time to do so. Since you are in the house, there are lots of things that you can do such as doing exercise (which is very important by the way), cooking, washing clothes, gardening, or anything that you can do in your free time. Try to go out and take a walk or go to the shopping mall and keep yourself busy. I believe that the feeling of working at home without getting out of the house just makes your next walk a more pleasurable one (based on my experience, that is).
- Motivate Yourself
It also helps that you can get yourself in a state wherein you can work regardless of the obstacles you’re facing, and that is done through motivation. There are a lot of techniques to motivate yourself, one of which is by setting goals. By knowing your purpose, you will have more energy to work on your job regardless of the adversities faced. It can help also to learn new things regularly by reading books or articles and watching videos. When you do this, you will start to develop your passion more and you will become an expert at your job, hence, attracting more success.
Overall, being a home-based worker is really not that bad at all. At times, these obstacles will come your way. But with the solutions at hand, I believe the problems won’t be a big deal. If you ask me what my take on working at home is, I believe it’s an awesome opportunity. Not only is it convenient, but it’s the way of the future. More and more companies are starting to tap into the wonderful benefits of working at home.
Living in a country with huge traffic problems, I find that working at home is the way out and the best solution that exists. Not only does it save you money but also lots of time that is just wasted in the road. I remember in my previous job, my work was about 9 hours (regular hours, excluding OT) while my total commute time is at least 3 hours, which amounts to 12 hours in total. Place it side-by-side with a home-based job and compare it, and you’ll see the big difference.
I have no hard feelings on the traditional workplace setting just to be clear. I simply believe that working at home can actually be a great alternative to work at office or field. Having explained to you the disadvantages instead of the advantages will make you think whether this kind of job is the right opportunity for you. Surely, you will earn both money and experience either way. But in the end, what matters is the method in which you will acquire them. Having different options to work gives you the freedom to choose instead of being fixated on just one approach.
That’s it, guys. These are the reasons why I think you would not want a home-based job. I’ve provided solutions so that you can still consider this opportunity a viable option. The question that I will leave for you is: Are work at home jobs an effective way to make money or not, and why? I’m looking forward to your answers in the comments section below. Good luck to all of you!
