What is Mary Kay All About?
Mary Kay is one of the oldest companies with the MLM business model, which stands for multi-level marketing.
It was founded on September 13, 1963 by Mary Kay and her son.
It’s widely regarded as the ‘grandmother’ of MLM companies because of its seniority.
Its counterpart, the ‘grandfather’, is Amway.
Going back, Mary Kay specializes on selling cosmetic products, including skin care, cosmetics, body care, fragrance, and men’s grooming products.
As you can see below, there’s a wide variety of products to choose from.
You can go to their online store and see all the products in more detail.
Rest assured, you’ll be getting quality products every time you purchase their product.
In fact, you can even ask for FREE personalized advice from a Beauty Consultant to know which products are perfect for you.
And if you’re not satisfied, there’s a ‘Satisfaction Guarantee’ in place which will refund the full purchase price if you didn’t like the product.
Bottomline, from the consumer’s point of view, you’re guaranteed to enjoy Mary Kay’s line of products.
How about from the business side?
Will you get to enjoy running an MK business?
Let’s find out.
The Biz Opp: How to Earn a Living With Mary Kay
At first, I was perplexed.
Mary Kay’s website introduces the business opportunity by flashing you with a Royal Caribbean International cruise:
It instantly gave me an impression that MK’s trying to hype things up.
Which is a common practice in money-making opportunities I come across.
Talk about gurus flashing a lambo, mansion, private pool, and a nice vacation spot.
In fact, Mary Kay is offering a pink Cadillac as the top prize:
I heard that it’s for people who can earn more than $100,000 in sales for one year.
Anyway, please don’t drool over these exciting incentives yet.
We haven’t even talked about getting started!
Speaking of which, there are 3 steps to participate in MK’s biz opportunity.
It starts with connecting with an Independent Beauty Consultant so you’ll know the specifics of the opportunity.
Next, you’ll be handed out an ‘Independent Beauty Consultant Agreement’ which you will sign and submit to the company.
Lastly, you’re going to get MK’s Starter Kit containing some beauty products and a guide on how the entire business works.
Then voila, you’re now a Mary Kay Independent Business Consultant!
By the way, the Starter Kit will cost you $100.
In other words, the cost to get inside Mary Kay is a hundred bucks.
However, in order to maintain your membership, you must buy at least $225 worth of MK products every 3 months.
The problem with this is if you haven’t sold your old products yet, then you’ll accumulate a lot of stuff at home.
It will pile up, forcing you to purchase additional storage space and conduct proper FIFO (first in, first out) management.
When it comes to getting paid, there’s a Compensation Plan in place.
Since Mary Kay is an MLM company, expect your income to come from different sources, such as:
- Direct Sales – this simply involves selling MK’s products to customers at a retail price, giving you 50% each sale
- Team Orders – earns you at least 4% commissions from downlines’ sales, but can go as high as 13% when you climb the ranks
- Team Building Bonuses – this ranges from $50 to $3,000 based on your leadership level and some performance requirements
It’s pretty simple compared to other MLM schemes, since there’s no matrix structure or special 1Up rules in place.
As for the pink Cadillac, it’s actually being paid on a 24-month lease, with YOU and your performance determining whether you can keep it or not.
Anyway, why would you need somebody’s Cadillac in the first place?
If you’re really good at business and making profits, then just buy yourself your own Cadillac and have it painted pink!
No need to borrow someone else’s car (It’s not sexy!)
Verdict: Should You Give MK Consultant Business a Go?
Cruise aside… Cadillacs aside…
Is it worth going into Mary Kay and becoming a consultant?
Even if it’s only for a stable full-time income that replaces your soul-sucking job, is MK a company you can put your faith on?
I believe, YES.
BUT, there are certain warnings you need to learn first before filling out that Consultant Form.
A common one has something to do with complaints.
You see, it’s possible to get a handful of customers complaining to MK’s products regarding its side effects:
As well as some order issues between customers and consultants:
Thing is, if you’re making the move from customer to consultant, your mindset is going to change because your job now is to take care of your customers.
Whatever issues they might have, you must be willing to address them.
Learn a lot and become an expert at cosmetics and skin care in order for you to serve others well.
In short, you have a responsibility to carry!
Another problem with becoming Mary Kay’s consultant has something to do with saturation.
Depending on where you reside, it’s possible that you’ll come across a significant amount of competitors in your area.
And usually, competition in MLM companies is not a good thing.
It means you’re fighting over the same limited resources.
I remember being grabbing an ‘Earnings Disclaimer’ from the website of Mary Kay Canada:
It suggests that only few people earn a decent income from becoming a consultant.
And from my experience, this statistic applies to all biz opp programs in the world.
Well, does this mean you’re doomed?
Of course not!
To really succeed with Mary Kay, my sincere advice for you is to learn the skill of selling, since it’s the ‘make or break’ skill that enables you to profit or not.
Learn proven marketing practices and don’t just go & aggressively pitch products like a door-to-door salesman.
MK suggests ‘hosting a party’ where you invite women into it, then your job is to gradually introduce the products by offering samples and hope that they’ll inquire from you.
So, what do you think?
Still committing into the business?
Overall: Mary Kay has been around for half a century, making it a well-established company to start a business on.
Unlike most MLM schemes I review on this website, which only sell the opportunity but have no products in place, MK is different.
Its product line sells real quality products to consumers.
So go ahead, give Mary Kay a shot. You can always leave if you feel it’s not for you.
By the way, here’s the list of countries where Mary Kay is available:
Check if yours is included in the list, then have a look at their website.
Earn a Living Without Handling Inventory, Here’s How
Who says you need products to run a business?
Who says you need items and storage to run an inventory?
Who says you need to buy wholesale and sell products at a retail price?
Look, it’s a totally different world this 2019!
Did you know that you can run a business ‘online’ and not have to worry about inventory management?
Sure, continue to specialize in cosmetics, beauty, or skin care if that’s your passion.
Just realize that there are new methods to monetize these niches.
Methods such as dropshipping and affiliate marketing.
Multi-level marketing is good, but the problem is you’re tied to someone else.
You’re a representative of a company and NOT really in full control of your business.
If control for your business is what you want, then I can show you the way.
My offer is to teach you affiliate marketing via my #1 recommended training platform.
I hang out inside this place, so you’re free to ask any question.
