Today, we’re going to talk about an online typing job called ProTypers, which is very similar to another site called MegaTypers. If you want to know more, just click on the link I provided above to see their actual website.
ProTypers is one of those websites offering you a typing job that pays an extra $200 per month. All you have to do is solve a captcha image and convert it into text. To get paid, you must complete a total of 1,000 images with correct answers.
Is this money-making scheme for real? Can you trust this site to make a living online? This article will cover all you need to learn about ProTypers and whether I think it’s a scam or legitimate opportunity.
My Insights on ProTypers and Solving CAPTCHAs
When I first entered the website, I thought it was an opportunity to show off my skills at typing. Initially, my goal was to earn money on the side and find a decent job that can fill in my extra time.
As I read the reviews on Google, I realized that it was all about solving and decoding images from a security feature known as CAPTCHA.
Remember those scribbly texts that you have to painstakingly figure out? Well, it turns out that ProTypers has a lot of them waiting to be solved by anyone who wants some extra cash on the side.
Admittedly, I was disappointed because I thought I’ll be given a PDF or JPEG image to work on and convert into a piece of text. I thought this company needed fast typists who can write page by page with great accuracy. I backed off when I realized I’ll be solving security codes all day.
How about you? Maybe a data entry job like this is something you want to do with your time. So the question is, can you trust this site to make you money? I’m afraid not, and here’s why.
The Red Flags: Why You Should Not Join ProTypers
Through my research of the website, I discovered some fatal flaws concerning the integrity of this money-making scheme. Please use these indicators as a guideline whether to join ProTypers or not.
1. Excruciatingly Low Pay for a Boring Job
How much does ProTypers pay? It depends on the time of the day you work, which ranges around 40 to 90 cents per 1,000 images solved. To cash out your earnings, you need to accumulate at least $3 if you plan to use PayPal, or $1.50 if you prefer to receive it as Bitcoin.
And how long does it take to solve 1,000 images? Let’s say you want to be paid in one hour, which is equivalent to 3,600 seconds. That translates to a rate of 3.6 seconds per image flashed with no delay. The problem is it usually takes longer than that, so your rate will further decrease.
In spotting online scams, I don’t consider low-paying jobs as scams unless there are consequences or bad practices in doing the job. However, this typing job is so cheap and boring that most people give up without reaching the end.
I’d rather answer surveys from Toluna which normally takes 15 minutes to finish and be paid a cheaper amount for an easy job.
2. Unrealistic Promise of Earnings
Now that you’ve learned the payment, we’ll head back to the original question: Can typing CAPTCHAs make you $200 a month? The short answer is yes, if you do it 24/7 with no breaks.
But if you look at the homepage of ProTypers, you know that it’s been stated completely different. The promise of “easy job, easy money” is a huge lie because it’s not really easy to reach 1,000 images and be paid $100 to $250 a month as a result. Unless you can work with all the time in your hands, you won’t earn much from this website.
3. Some Images Can Be Difficult to Solve
You don’t just type letters and numbers, you also have to decode the texts on those images. During those 1,000 images, you will most likely encounter dozens of captchas that are pretty tough to solve and is just not readable. Some of them are blurred, some covered with contrasting colors, while some are mistaken for another letter or number.
Here’s the problem, you only have 15 seconds to answer the security code. If you don’t submit an answer, it will be considered a mistake. 10 mistakes or unanswered images within 24 hours will get your account banned.
Although you have the option to select “I don’t know”, the problem is it might still be considered a mistake, which is bad for your job.
4. Images Load Very Slowly
When you have 1,000 images to solve before making real money, you know that every second counts. A 1-second delay could worsen into 1,000 seconds, 2 seconds being 2,000 and so on.
Here’s the bad news. The captcha images at ProTypers/MegaTypers are very slow loading. Therefore there’s going to be an interval between two images, which further decreases your earning potential.
5. The Boostpack is an Epic Fail
To make images load faster, there’s an option of buying a boostpack which allows you to solve up to 800 images per hour. It will cost some of your Typer Credits to buy one that lasts for 15 minutes.
Seriously, will you use your measly income just to increase your earning potential for 15 short minutes? Plus, the price of the pack is quite expensive, which can really affect your overall earnings.
6. You Might Get Banned Before You Even Earn
I’ve read somewhere that 90% of the members who join never make it to their first payout. It’s either people quit, made a lot of captcha mistakes, or got banned just as they’re about to reach the threshold.
Not only that, some members complain that they got their account closed for unexplained reasons. I feel pity for them as they’ve wasted their time and efforts in a company that pays extremely cheap.
To me, having a lot of members banned means that they’re not willing to pay the workers they’ve hired. Bottomline, you’re vulnerable to this company at any given point while working, which is a sign of bad things to come.
7. Captcha Solving is an Unethical Job
The people who outsource these cheap solving jobs are normally spammers or hackers who are trying to break into others’ websites. When you join ProTypers, you’ll become part of a massive captcha solving farm that helps make it possible.
Just to clarify, it’s legal to solve captchas, but the purpose for what you do is most likely illegal. Will typing security codes be a job you can stand tall and brag with your friends? You decide.
But for me, I consider ProTypers/MegaTypers as illegal and a boring typing scheme to be involved on. There are too many cons and very few pros to justify this work at home opportunity, which leads to my final verdict:
Seriously, You’re Worth MORE Than $200 Per Month
It is possible to make $200 per month in ProTypers. What the owners didn’t mention is how hard it’s going to be to get there. You need to work harder than full-time to actually reach the monthly income that’s being claimed.
But think about it, how far can $200 get you in life? Probably not that much. I mean, you were looking at this review to find a way to earn a side income that’s worth your time and effort, but you’re seeing a monthly cap of 200 bucks?
My point is, you are capable of earning WAY more than $200 a month. There are many ways to do that, which involves something that you can scale up.
Imagine investing all those hours of time and effort into something that you can grow or be an expert at. You’ll be rocking in a few years’ time, with the sky being your limit in monthly income.
Perhaps you can try a freelancing job such as transcribing, writing, web design, or consulting. It pays more and can give you an enjoyable learning experience than converting a scribbly image into text.
If you decide to blog or create an online business, the best place to start is at Wealthy Affiliate. You don’t need technical knowledge to understand the training. Just be willing to learn and have the right attitude towards success and you’ll do great.
Kyle & Carson (the owners) are generous because they’re willing to let people try the platform for FREE (with no time limit). This ensures that you’re ready to commit to the program with enough knowledge and skills without being forced to pull out a credit card to pay.
